What is an Attitude and a Positive Attitude?
What is an Attitude?
Attitude is our feelings, thoughts, emotions, and behavioral tendencies toward a specific object, situation, and other people. It is an individual predisposition towards given aspects that have been set by their perceiving, feeling, reacting, and expressing capacity. According to Katz and Scotland, ” an attitude is defined as a learned pre-dispositions to respond in a consistently favorable or unfavorable manner with respect to a given object”. An attitude is an individual’s feelings and behavior that are observed during every activity. Attitude comprises beliefs, thought, perception, and feeling that drive an individual’s career and success. According to G.W. Allport, ” attitude is a mental and neutral state of readiness organized through experience, exerting a directive or dynamic influence upon individual’s response to all objects and situations with which it is related”. Attitude is the mental state of an individual that prepares him/her to react or make a situation, object, or other person. It is a generic sense of individual, including but not limited to, perceiving, feeling, reacting, and expressing capacity.
Attitude can be seen in an individual’s expression and behavior. The attitude of the individual is driven by psychological factors like values, belief, perception, and thought. William James of Harvard University said, ” The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitude of mind.” Universally, humans are born with their own values and importance that their attitudes have shaped. That’s why attitude plays the biggest role to make an individual’s life happy and successful.
Positive Attitude is the Golden Key to Success.
The foundation of success is ‘attitude’. The foundation of the success of your chosen field is attitude. A study attributed to Harvard University found that when a person gets a job, 85% of the time it is because of their attitude, and only 15% of the time because of how smart they are and how many facts and figures they know. Although almost 100% of education cost goes to teaching facts and figures which account for only 15% of success in work. Attitude applies to every individual in life, including one’s personal and professional life. ‘Opportunity is always under your feet but we don’t have to go anywhere. All we need to do is recognize it. The same opportunity never knocks twice. The next one may be better or worse, but it is never the same one (Shiva Kheda)’. Our attitude determines how we look at setbacks in a view of positive or negative. Attitude can be a stepping stone to success.
We are born with attitudes and develop them as we matured. Our attitude is shaped by 3 factors (3E): 1) environment, 2) experience, and 3) education. An environment consists of a home, school, college, work, culture, religious background, traditional belief, and socio-political environment. All of these environments create a tendency and culture. This culture and tendency exist in any place, a home, an organization, a company, or a country. Culture in any place always goes top-down approach never bottom-up. We need to look at what kind of environment we have created for ourselves and those are in around us. It needs to evaluate time and again what are in or what we have created for others.
An environment plays an important role in forming the attitude of individuals. Our attitude toward a person with positive expression becomes positive and vice-versa. Likewise, experience changes our behaviors because the experience is obtained from real practices. A positive experience can form a positive attitude in the individual. Similarly, education is not just an academic qualification but also both formal and informal. Knowledge comes from education, and knowledge develops the inner capacity seen in an individual’s feelings, expressions, and reactions toward objects, situations, and other people. Knowledge is contained with wisdom and success. As a result, it also contributes to an individual for personal and professional development.
A person with a positive attitude has great personal traits which are easily recognized by the organization and society. Mainly, they are confident, patient, polite, humble, and honest. We are responsible ourselves for our positive attitude regardless of our environment, education, and experience. We have to take responsibility for our great manner and culture. We ourselves blame everyone and everything. We should stop blaming and criticizing for failures. We ought to go into the mainstream of success, put our dream together, and move forward. Positive things like truth, honesty, trustworthiness, punctuality, integrity, etc. must be put in a positive state of mind. The success of an individual depends on their own qualities. Quality is shaped by their attitude not only by education, experience, and, environment. People with a positive attitude are the biggest assets and liability to society, organization, and country.
